When the sun goes down

North Lake Tahoe is all about fun in the sun in the summertime. But making the most of every vacation minute means that the fun picks up when the sun goes down.

Start your evening at one of several new, upscale eateries, such as Baxter’s Bistro and Lounge or the Chocolate Bar in the Village at Northstar. Classic restaurants, such as Gar Woods Grill and Pier, Jake’s On the Lake, Sunnyside Resort and the Lone Eagle Grille are noteworthy stops serving up fine food and lively evenings.

Wine bars have made their mark on the scene in recent years. The Pour House and Trio Wine Bar, both in Truckee, and Uncorked in the Village at Squaw take you through the early hours while Spindleshanks in Tahoe Vista is known for its flights of wine in addition to a full bar and bistro.

A trip to North Lake Tahoe isn’t complete without a roll of the dice or a hand of blackjack as a handful of casinos are found nestled among the Crystal Bay and Incline Village shoreline. The Cal-Neva Resort, Crystal Bay Club, Tahoe Nugget and Tahoe Biltmore Lodge & Casino are located in Crystal Bay, while the tables and slots at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort in Incline Village sit within a grand, Old Tahoe setting.

The Breeze at the Tahoe Biltmore and the Crystal Bay Club both host an eclectic and popular lineup of performances throughout the year, with the Crystal Bay Club featuring live entertainment most days of the week with many shows offered free.

The Village at Squaw keeps things lively with the Auld Dubliner, an authentic Irish pub, which hosts live Irish entertainment on a regular basis, with local and touring Irish bands performing Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

For a signature summer Lake Tahoe evenings, there’s the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival presenting rotating performances of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Measure for Measure” along with its Urban Village Monday Night Music Series from now through August 23.

The Lake Tahoe Music Festival fills the summer nights with melody Thursdays and Saturday evenings through August 8.  The 2008 lineup includes jazz favorites Fourplay and the Yellowjackets, rock legends Huey Lewis and The News and Boz Scaggs and the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra’s Broadway and finale performance.  Concerts take place at scenic venues such as West End Beach at Donner Lake, Old Greenwood, Tahoe Donner and Homewood Ski Resort.

Entertainment is also found throughout North Lake Tahoe’s other venues from the jazzy sounds of live music at Moody’s in Truckee to free, evening concerts on the beach in Tahoe City and Kings Beach.
