North Lake Tahoe COVID-19 FAQ’s

Travel to North Lake Tahoe

The character of North Lake Tahoe is enhanced by the fact that the region spans both California and Nevada.  However, in a time like this, that lends to some extra challenges for our region.  Both states (and a number of counties) are diligently working through this pandemic. There are differing requirements and restrictions between the two states that visitors should be aware of. Please visit our COVID-19 Page for an up-to-date listing of state specific information.

The business community is eager to welcome guests in a safe environment. With an abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities, culinary offerings, locally owned shops, gaming entertainment and more, each business sector has been working tirelessly to provide a safe and healthy experience for both residents and guests.

For full details on each state’s modifications and to see a list of business sectors allowed to open at this time, refer to the California Reopening Information and the Nevada Reopening Information from the respective state entities.

We have also created a comprehensive Know Before You Go Informational Guide that provides tips and recommendations to best prepare for your North Lake Tahoe adventures. The guide provides specific information on a variety of business sectors and what to expect this season.

Please note that face coverings or masks are required when outside the home in California and Nevada. Here are exact details on the California mandate, and here are exact details on the Nevada mandate. Please help us limit the spread, Mask Up!

Restaurant and Business Updates

Allowances and restrictions are changing regularly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic so please check business websites or give them a call for specific information on operations and modifications as things continue to change rapidly.

North Lake Tahoe businesses have put safety and health as their top priority and are implementing a wide variety of safety measures to keep both guests and employees safe.  To see industry guidelines that have been outlined for North Lake Tahoe Businesses, visit Washoe County’s site (NV) or Placer County’s site (CA)

Some restaurants and retail businesses are now open with modified operations.  Throughout the region, most restaurants are offering takeout services. Nevada locations are offering indoor dining with limited capacities, and at this time Nevada locations are limited to a 4-person party size. Bars are open in Nevada however bars in California are closed.

Some regional ordinances have been loosened to allow restaurants and retail to expand their outside offerings.  Please look for signage at all business locations with specifics on how they are handling traffic flow, payment options and requirements to enjoy their services.

Outdoor Recreation in North Lake Tahoe

Not only is getting outside to enjoy nature allowed, but it’s encouraged – nature has a way of restoring the soul.  A number of outdoor recreation activities are approved to be open and available at this time. If you are partaking in them, please be mindful of others while recreating outdoors, bring your personal protective equipment,  and keep an eye out for these signs along the way to remind you of best practices.

And most importantly, plan ahead! This year is different. Guests must check with businesses before arriving to confirm availability and to be sure they are adhering to modifications and requirements. Practice road and weather safety. Be aware of winter weather advisories and make sure you’re prepared with 4-wheel drive or chains and an emergency kit in your car. There will be reduced indoor shelter options if roads are closed so don’t rely on them this year.

Downhill Ski Resorts

While some ski resorts may differ slightly in their operations, social distancing, mask requirements and capacity limits are being implemented across all North Tahoe ski resorts to protect public health during the winter season. North Lake Tahoe is urging guests to visit the websites of individual ski resorts and lodging properties for the most up-to-date information when planning a winter trip. Visit our Preparing for the 20/21 Winter Ski Season blog for information on, and links to, individual resorts.

Cross Country Skiing, Snowshoeing and Snow Biking

Outdoor activities are acceptable as long as safe, physical distancing of 6 feet or more is maintained. Please be mindful of crowds along popular trails. Don’t congregate at trail heads. Pick wide trails vs. single track, and loop trails vs. out-and-back trails. Managed facilities requiring tickets will have limited indoor operations and many will only be offering online ticket sales.

Backcountry Skiing, Snowboarding and Snowmobiling

It’s imperative to be well versed in avalanche safety and rescue techniques before venturing out of ski area boundaries. It can take hours or days for rescue personnel to assist when there is trouble in the backcountry. You must be responsible for your own actions.

A coalition of avalanche safety, nonprofit, and winter backcountry organizations have established December 14-18 as the Tahoe-Truckee region’s first Backcountry Safety Awareness Week. The unique collaboration is an effort to amplify backcountry safety and avalanche education opportunities and encourage people to know what they’re getting into before they venture out unprepared. Even after the awareness week has passed, the site will continue to be a great resource for anyone considering backcountry activities.

Casinos in Nevada

Casinos were given clearance to reopen in Nevada beginning on June 4th.  They are implementing a number of modifications to proceed forward.  Many will have reduced occupancies along with stringent cleaning procedures.  Guests should expect limited numbers of players at table games. Some resorts plan to disinfect dice between shooters, clean chips periodically and change card decks frequently

Special Events

Many winter events have been canceled or postponed due to COVID-19. We will continue to provide event updates here as things change.  Please inquire directly with event producers if you have questions during this time of uncertainty.  And certainly make sure to check out a number of virtual experiences to connect you to North Lake Tahoe.

Transportation

Tahoe Area Rapid Transit (TART) is operating on reduced services. Routes are subject to change so passengers should utilize the Transit NextBus app for real-time arrival information.  Passengers must load through the rear door when possible.  Please adhere to physical distancing requests and riders are strongly encouraged to wear masks.
