The first-ever North Lake Tahoe Express daily airport shuttle service began November 15 and is available to and from North Lake Tahoe and the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Travelers can book reservations on 21-passenger shuttles on one of three routes, which include stops at major North Lake Tahoe lodging properties and ski resorts. North Lake Tahoe Express runs from 3:30 a.m. until 12 midnight. Fares are $35 per person, one-way, $60 round trip. Considered one of Lake Tahoe premier summer events, the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival offers the Bard at his best every July and August. Held in an outdoor venue at Sand Harbor State Park, attendees enjoy the high-end performances, with Lake Tahoe as a backdrop, while dining on wine and cheese at the park’s pristine beaches.

After 20 years of work, the Tahoe Rim Trail, a 165-mile loop trail that runs along the ridges circling Lake Tahoe, was completed in September 2001. More than 10,000 volunteers and the U.S. Forest Service built the trail. It is open to hikers, equestrians, and on 60 percent of the trail for mountain bikers. An estimated 3,000 people use the trail each week during peak summer and fall months. The Tahoe Rim Trail is considered one of the nation’s most successful volunteer trail projects. Each year, more than 1,000 volunteers give more than 10,000 hours to the organization.

Explore the Thunderbird Lodge Historic Site, open for guided tours from May through October, and other times by prior arrangement. Tours take visitors on an hour walk throughout the Whittell estate, including the Lighthouse Room, the Old Lodge, the maids’ quarters and original kitchen, as well as a trip through the 600-foot underground tunnel leading to the Card House and Boat House. In the Boat House visitors may find the fabulous yacht, Thunderbird, built for George Whittell in 1939. The yacht is a 55-foot long, John Hacker design with mahogany hull and dual aircraft engines and is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece built in a bygone era.

North Lake Tahoe comes together at the pique of winter for a ten-day carnival celebration. Thousands of travelers and locals come out to play at area festivals and celebrations, including a polar bear swim, dog pull, fireworks, parades and compete in broomball, ice sculpting competition and the Great Ski Race. The next event is 2-11, 2007.

Be among the first to experience the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, which opened recently in Incline Village. Interactive stations illuminate facts about Lake Tahoe’s fragile environment. This visitors’ attraction also showcases the building’s sustainable features and cutting-edge “green” concepts, and is home to some of the country’s leading scientists.

These museums display Lake Tahoe history, including early skiing gear, logging, shipping and railroad equipment, vintage newspapers, artifacts from the Washoe tribe, more than 1,000 Indian baskets and many reading displays. Open May through September.

This honeymoon cottage was built overlooking the lake in 1908. It is preserved as it looked at the time and decorated with many original furnishings. It is listed as the oldest home built in Tahoe City and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Open Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The Tahoe Arts Festival, founded in 1999, was specifically designed for the cultural traveler because of its colorful Italian Street Painting, where regional and local artists create paintings on individualized squares with colorful chalk depicting traditional, modern, original and avant-garde designs. The event is free and held every July.
